Designers, Brands & Installations to See at Stockholm Design Week 2019

Returning for the 18th edition, tomorrow marks the beginning of Swedish Design Week and the worlds leading event for Scandinavian design; the Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair. Running from the 5 - 9 February, the Fair will play host to a wealth of international exhibitors, alongside talks by leading industry figures. Below, we select the designers, brands and installations not to be missed including; Acne’s Creative Director Sarah Widoff’s installation and the Malmö based collective changing perceptions of local waste materials.

Jumbo NYC

Founded by New York based friends Justin and Monling, design practice Jumbo’s namesake is derived from the blending together of the duo’s names, a nod to their purely collaborative approach to design. Beginning back in 2016, the pair focus on attention to detail and materiality, with a playful approach at the core of their creations. The four-piece Neotenic collection (pictured) is clunky, curved and “cherishes the childlike” and will be on display as part of Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair's Green House exhibition.

Temperament by Sahara Widoff

Renowned set designer Sahara Widoff, has been tasked with designing Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair’s Key Exhibition for 2019. Titled Temperament: Inner Room/Outer room, this will be the first exhibition Widoff has designed for the Swedish-based interior fair. Currently, Widoff is the Creative Director at Acne Studio’s and has previously worked with Alexander McQueen, Ann-Sofi Back and Svenskt Tenn.

Malmö Upcycling Service

A 5-part collective of designers based in Sweden, the Malmö Upcycling Service are changing perceptions of waste materials, creating objects not only aesthetically desirable but environmentally sustainable. Joining an increasing number of designers who are championing more circular manufacturing methods within the design industry, the team are committed to their goal; “We share an unshakable will to challenge and encourage the industry to work in a more sustainable manner”. All pieces are designed with the ability to be broke down and repurposed, such as the From Spill to Resource collection pictured here. The collective will be showing new work this February titled You Can't Sit With Us!.

Edvin Klasson

Up-and-coming furniture designer Edvin Klasson works from his base in Olso, using a variety of local manufacturers to realise his pieces. Working from archetypal designs such as the ottoman, the inspiration behind Galata (pictured), he creates parred back functional pieces for modern living.

Working with a range of established and rising designers, Northern manufacture streamlined designs true to the Nordic aesthetic. Lightweight and muted in colour, the pieces are designed to be worked and reworked into flexible interior spaces - classic and timeless in form. The brand, now in its 12th year, prides itself on the use of traditional craftsmanship and their focus on injecting beauty and functionality into each piece.

 Talks Program

Also taking place as part of Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair will be a series of over 100 talks featuring a host of prominent names in the design industry including; designer Tom Dixon, design historian and journalist Alice Rawsthorn and designer Sabine Marcelis.
