The purpose of art, we believe, is to facilitate an internal enquiry. Like the smell of cinnamon on freshly baked goods, art should linger on your skin, its presence a physical entity around your body and consciousness. It isn’t merely a pretty tapestry to be hung on your wall and forgotten, its presence should be corporeal, felt deep in your bones long after it’s out of your eyesight.
Akaar is inspired by real conversations and people. We collaborate with tribal and folk artisans from the remotest and most forgotten corners of the country and we seek to shine a light on their perspectives. We use a variety of mediums — installation, sculptures, illustrations — to highlight alternative perspectives.
Akaar’s greatest aim is to take hold of your senses, emotions, and conscience. We seek to trigger emotions, be it good or bad, and challenge your most deeply held beliefs. We want to hold up a mirror to society, but not just any mirror, a funhouse mirror where our follies and foibles can be mutated into something altogether comical.
Laughter is medicinal, and there’s nothing quite as healing as the ability to poke fun at yourself. At Akaar, we laugh at ourselves, at the society we live in, and at the world at large, all in an attempt to make sense of it. While we can’t offer answers to the life’s greatest mysteries, we can sure join you as you scratch your head and wonder.
And when we’re not busy inflating our egos with socially-driven projects, we like to simply have fun designing cute and quirky little everyday products. So if you wanna smile while drinking from your coffee mug or even while cleaning dishes, feel free to check out some of our products at Clay-by Akaar.
Clay by Akaar is all about turning ordinary everyday objects into extraordinary founts of creativity and joy.
We use plates, spoons, and coffee mugs everyday. In fact, a coffee mug is one of the first objects you interact with after waking up. You pour yourself a hot brew as you think about the day to come. So wouldn’t it be nice if it could also make you smile?
At Clay by Akaar, we bring life to otherwise inanimate objects — our quirky little hand-crafted clay objects make you smile, they make you wonder, and they make you dream. Owning clay products is like owning a part of your childhood and remembering the happy days of summer with Nutties running around in the garden or having a winter cuddle with Chef Puff!
Who Am I?
Just like many other designer/entrepreneurs, A human struggling and hustling everyday to make Art and Product that can bring purpose in someone’s life!
I am Satabdi, born in the beautiful, peaceful and often forgettable place in India, Odisha. Where we breathe art and craft. I was brought up in the capital city of India, New Delhi, which gave me the exposure to understand life, people and art a little more and educated in the US, which helped me polish my skills.
Like everyone who is starting and has dreams of a being a successful entrepreneur one day, I started my business from savings and family from the back of my house. Initial years were nightmare, but now we have survived 5 glorious and eventful years. And are very proud of some of the work we have produced.
Akaar is our studio where we experiment and make interesting installations and art.
