What to See at Milan Design Week 2019


Gearing up for another Milan Design Week we have selected our pick from the myriad launches, exhibitions and events keeping the city abuzz from the 9th - 14th April. Spanning Tortona to Ventura Centrale amongst our selection are; exhibitors past and present; country showcases; and installations pioneering circular economies and conscious consumption. Once you've checked out the usual Fuorisalone highlights - COS, Superdesign Studio -  then make sure to stop over at the following. 


BRUT Collective Bodem

Returning to Salone del Mobile, Belgian-based collective Brut will be presenting another aesthetically alluring installation. Remaining within the Isola Design District, the hub for emerging talent and home to many of Milan’s lesser known architectural gems, the award-winning designers will presents, Bodem. Presenting a warmer selection of materials and textures this year’s edition pays homage to architectural site Tongeren and its rich earth.

Inspired in Barcelona: Mediterranean Design

A celebration of Catalonian and its distinctive design culture, Inspired in Barcelona: Mediterranean Design brings together an array of designers from the region. The exhibition will showcase how Catalonia’s lifestyle and open culture has formed a community of inspired creators.

“…a diverse culture between the mountains and the sea, wide open to the world, yet so very singular and built at a human scale; an open culture fuelled by curiosity – alive, dynamic and chaotic –where tradition entwines harmoniously with modernity; an emotional culture, of high spirits and endless creativity.”

Norwegian Presence

Themed around community and sustainability, this year’s Norwegian Presence demonstrates the 21 designers growing awareness of issues surrounding over production and over consumption. Utilising Milan Design Week as an influence platform, the designers, both established and emerging, will be collaborating on a joint showcase which addresses sustainability from a wider perspective. The exhibition is curated by Kråkvik&D’Orazio and features Mijo Studio, Vera & Kyte and Vestre.

Noroo, Kwangho Lee and Wang & Söderström Tides

South Korean paint brand Nooro joins Korea-based Kwangho Lee and Danish-duo Wang & Söderström to present Tides a surreal landscape of shapes and colours. Drawing inspiration from “the complex dance of gravity between the moon, earth and sun” the installation will mimic natures rhythms in a display of light, colour and movement.

Eileen Fisher Waste No More 
It’s fast becoming common knowledge that fashion is the second most polluting industry on the planet, with 11.1M tons of textiles ending up in landfills annually. Sustainability-minded US brand Eileen Fisher will confront visitors will a physical representation of the issue in Waste No More, presenting a towering arch of ‘discarded’ garments. The exhibition will demonstrate the brands long-standing dedication to recycling alongside their research and experimentation into creating new aesthetically captivating textiles... some can be likened to a Rothko.
